EPA Webinar – Tools for Source Water Protection
March 10 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
|Tue, Mar 21, 2023 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM MDT
EPA’s Office of Water’s Source Water Protection (SWP) team will be presenting on two tools: The Drinking Water Mapping Application to Protect Source Waters (DWMAPS) and the Funding Integration Tool for Source Water (FITS). In addition, there will be a brief overview of the background and concepts of source water protection. Both tools were developed by the SWP Program and can be used either independently or in tandem by many stakeholders for their source water protection needs. DWMAPS incorporates layers from other EPA programs and federal agencies that inform users of potential sources of contamination, land use trends, ongoing source water protection projects and collaborations, and more. Webcast participants will learn how to utilize spatial data from DWMAPS and upload their own data to assess the influence or vulnerabilities presented by point sources and non-point sources of contamination on a drinking water provider’s source water. The webcast will also cover available map layers and widgets within DWMAPS and explain how certain layers may be used in conjunction to discover areas of concern and plan for source water protection. FITS assists state agencies and other SWP partners in leveraging funding to protect sources of drinking water. The tool is a resource for developing and improving SWP programs and includes details on specific uses and limitations of funding sources. FITS also includes examples of communities and state agencies that have leveraged one or more federal funding programs to enhance source water protection efforts. During this webcast participants will learn about the tool’s resources and how to navigate it effectively to meet their needs.
