SUMMARY:EPA Webinar - Source Water Protection and Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:I. Using Molecular Methods to Study Cyanobacterial Blooms. This presentation introduces molecular monitoring approaches used in the detection and quantification of cyanobacterial groups and cyanotoxin genes implicated in harmful algal blooms. Results will be presented from next generation sequence analysis and qPCR/RT-qPCR methods to characterize cyanobacterial community structure\, associated bacterial community\, toxic cyanobacteria\, and geographically localized genotypes or species. The methods study cyanobacterial functional genes associated with nutrients in toxin production\, their relationship to water quality parameters\, and explore drivers of cyanotoxin production using mRNA-based sequence analysis. This presentation also discusses occurrence\, distribution\, temporal-spatial variations of cyanobacteria\, especially toxin-producers\, and use as early warning systems for cyanotoxin production. \nII. Funding Integration Tool for Source Water: Finding a Plan a FITS. With different funding mechanisms available\, it can be difficult finding one that works for specific source water protection needs. EPA’s Source Water Protection Team created the Funding Integration Tool for Source Water (FITS)\, a one-stop-shop tool that explains how users can integrate various federal funding sources to support activities that protect drinking water sources. This presentation discusses the basic functions and value of the tool and demonstrates use of FITS in a mock scenario. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:EPA Training: Introductory Webinar on Climate Impacts
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Creating Resilient Water Utilities (CRWU) initiative is providing a series of five\, free webinars for drinking water\, wastewater\, and stormwater (water sector) utility owners and operators\, as well as other water sector stakeholders in the Northwest climate region of the U.S. This webinar training series titled “Building Resilience and Adapting to Climate Change Impacts for Drinking Water and Wastewater Utilities” begins with an Introductory webinar concentrating on the impacts of climate change in the Northwest\, the identification of adaptation options\, and a utility climate change risk assessment case study. The following four webinars focus on conducting a climate change risk assessment using EPA’s Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT)\, developing resilience and adaptation projects\, and identifying financing programs to pay for infrastructure projects. \n  \nCREAT is a web-based risk assessment application for water sector utilities to assess and address current and potential future climate change impacts. This free training will help utilities incorporate climate change considerations into their decision-making\, identify adaptation projects to build long-term resilience\, and learn about federal and local resources for financing utility resilience projects. SUMMARY:2022 World Water Day
DESCRIPTION:[United Nations] World Water Day\, on 22 March every year\, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. This year’s theme  ‘groundwater’\, draws attention to the hidden water resource that has always been critically important but not fully recognized in sustainable development policymaking. \nUnder the title ‘Groundwater – Making the invisible visible’\, this year’s campaign will explain groundwater’s vital role in water and sanitation systems\, agriculture\, industry\, ecosystems and climate change adaptation. \nThe overarching message of the campaign is that exploring\, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving and adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population. \nLearn more about the World Water Day 2022 campaign here.

SUMMARY:2022 Groundwater Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) and The Groundwater Foundation (GF) have announced that Groundwater Awareness Week (GWAW) will take place March 6-12. \nAn annual observance established in 1999 to highlight the responsible development\, management\, and use of groundwater\, the event is also a platform to encourage yearly water well testing and well maintenance\, and the promotion of policies impacting groundwater quality and supply. Groundwater advocates across the country also use GWAW to highlight local water issues in their communities. \nThis year\, NGWA and its partners will be focusing their advocacy on promoting professional opportunities in the groundwater industry. According to the American Geosciences Institute\, nationally there are more than 135\,000 open positions in the industry now\, which is far too high to keep up with consumer demand. \nFor more information\, please click here.

SUMMARY:EPA Webinar - Assessing the Toxicity of PFAS Chemicals to Aquatic Organisms
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nFor more information on this event\, visit the U.S. EPA Water Research webpage. \nAmong the many questions surrounding per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are their potential effects on aquatic communities. While much of the initial research effort has focused on ecological effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)\, there is a much wider range of PFAS that can occur in the environment―both as a result of more recently developed compounds and the breakdown products of other PFAS. Effective management of PFAS in aquatic systems requires understanding of the potential effects of a more complete range of PFAS chemicals. \nEPA is working to explore the relationships between PFAS toxicity and chemical structure for several aquatic species to help identify and predict the toxicity of PFAS and PFAS mixtures of greatest ecological concern in support of the development of water quality guidelines. This involves measuring the toxicity of PFAS with varying structural features\, determining variation in sensitivity across species\, and grouping PFAS chemicals by their inferred toxic modes of action (MoA). This webinar will discuss initial findings that sublethal toxicity is strongly related to fluorinated chain length as well as the structure of the non-fluorinated “head” group\, and that differences in toxicity of certain PFAS across structures suggest that multiple PFAS MoAs likely exist. \nEPA will use your registration information solely for this event and for invitations to future events. We will not share your information with any third party. \nIt is EPA’s policy to make reasonable accommodation to persons with disabilities wishing to participate in the Agency’s programs and activities\, pursuant to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973\, 29 U.S.C. 791. Any request for accommodation should be made to Sam Whately at EPA-Webinar-Series@icf.com in advance of the webinar. \nFor future viewing\, a closed-captioned recording of this webinar will be made available on EPA’s YouTube site.

SUMMARY:EPA Webinar - Using State Revolving Funds For Source Water Protection
DESCRIPTION:Feb. 2\, 12-2 p.m. MST \nRegister Here \nState Revolving Funds offer numerous ways to support and encourage the implementation of projects aimed at the protection of source waters. Kara Goodwin\, US EPA\, will open the session with a national overview of SRF-related tools currently available to environmental entities interested in source water protection. \nThe Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program (DWSRF) funds Source Water Protection through two different optional set-asides: State Program Management (10%) and Local Assistance and Other State Programs (15%). April Byrne\, US EPA ORISE Fellow\, will showcase recent source water protection project eligibility and spending trends within these two set-asides. Potential increases to the DWSRF capitalization grants in the future would in turn increase opportunities to fund source water protection efforts. Learn how to maximize these two set-asides to benefit source water quality. \nWith most of the state of Nebraska sourcing their drinking water from groundwater\, Tatiana Davila\, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy\, will share how Nebraska is utilizing DWSRF Set-Asides for groundwater protection and capacity building for education and outreach programs. \nFaced with increasingly frequent and intense wildfires\, Lindsey Jones\, Arizona Water Infrastructure Finance Authority\, will present an overview of how Arizona is using CWSRF to thin forests in an effort to protect watershed health and source waters for the City of Flagstaff. \nAll are welcome! \nFederal\, State\, Tribal\, and municipal government staff\, private sector professionals\, nonprofits\, and watershed organizations.
